Following God into the Fall
“Following God into the Fall”
That’s a phrase I’ve been playing around with in my mind and heart during my own quiet time over the course of the last few weeks. What does it look like to follow God into the fall here in Jackson?
I know my summer was a busy one. It seems that’s true for most of us here in Jackson. Our community swells with part-time residents, we operate three church campuses, rather than one, all of our helping organizations ramp up programs and campaigns, summertime activities for our children are everywhere, and many of us head for the trails and the backcountry while the weather permits.
Fall, though, brings a different pace. There’s still plenty to do. But, the days get shorter, kids are back in school and sports, and there’s less demand to show up somewhere for something every night of the week. I’m grateful for the slowed pace. It gives me time to take stock—to reflect on the things I’m grateful for, to take note of what I wasn’t able to accomplish over the last few months and decide if those tasks should remain on my list. The changing leaves, the return of the cooler weather, witnessing the animals migrating from there to here also reminds me that God so carefully created this world and continues to steward it artfully and lovingly.
For me, following God into the Fall looks like intentionally slowing my pace. Spending time with these stories we’ve had from Matthew that deliver us this consistent message that we are beloved of God, that we are enough, quieting my mind and heart through prayer and mindfulness (being present to the present without judgment) and self-compassion. It’s a wonderful time of regrounding and restoring.
I wonder what it looks like for you?
Love, Jimmy
