Sacred Ground
This spring and early summer a group of parishioners participated in a pilot workshop entitled ‘Sacred Ground" an intensive 11 week study facilitated by Mary and Brian. The curriculum was “A film based dialogue on Race and Faith," developed by the Episcopal Church as part of a social justice initiative led by Bishop Michael Curry. The objective of this work is to become a ‘beloved church community’.
Participant M. E. Weber writes:
The curriculum includes readings and films on the difficult, complex, and thorny issues of racism, white privilege, systemic and institutional bias of the implementation of social programs, and the role of the church in past injustices. The hope is that a deeper understanding of the truth, and steps toward reconciliation can heal some of the polarization in our current political and cultural landscape. One of the books included in the curriculum, “Jesus and the Disinherited “ by Howard Thurman is full of hope. A quote from a reviewer reads “Thurman’s work reaches past anger and distrust toward a vision of unity”.
In our workshop sessions we had deep discussions, exploring relevant social issues together. We were all grateful for the opportunity to share our thoughts and feelings openly and safely. These topics can be unsettling. We all felt that this important work helped each of us to become more aware and more responsible for our individual conduct and actions.
As part of our church mission of making a ‘love spreading difference’, we are engaged in outreach to communities in need and supporting the causes that expose social injustice and inequality. We wholeheartedly support our Indigenous communities on the nearby reservations. We are committed to being a ‘beloved church community’. We believe that sharing this Sacred Ground curriculum, and having more intentional conversations with members of our church community about social injustices and racism in America, complements our church mission. We invite you to stay tuned for more information and follow up on this deeply moving and relevant ‘Sacred Ground’ program.
If you are interested in learning more please contact Mary or Brian. They can provide more information about the course and put you in touch with participants who can share their experience of the work with you.
