Friday, August 5, 2022, 3:44 PM
Join us for our annual Stewardship Sunday service with brunch following. Don't miss our one service at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2022. (Reminder that there is no 8:00 a.m. service!) We will break bread together afterwards to get excited for the year ahead.
For the last couple of years, in my mind, I’ve considered those who come to our beloved valley to visit. And, I’ve divided that group into two separate categories. I like to say there are two types of people who visit Jackson Hole—tourists and pilgrims. There are those who come here because it’s trendy, their friends say “they have to visit Jackson Hole,” they’re keeping up with the Joneses. Those folks I consider tourist. We know our economy needs them, and we who live here benefit from their visits. And, then, there’s a second group of folks—maybe you were one before you moved here (I certainly was)—I call those folks pilgrims. They come into this valley with a sense of reverence and awe, recognizing the sacred combination of river, mountain, prairie, fauna. They get quiet, rather than loud. They smile, or they might even cry. Those folks are pilgrims.
I aspire to live as the pilgrim lives wherever I find myself. I want to stretch to meet and partner with the Holy Spirit, here at home in Teton Valley, Wyoming or wherever I find myself. I’d like for our church family to give that some attention in the coming year. How is it that, wherever we are, we encounter the holy in landscape, culture, humanity? We are a church centered in Wyoming but reaching out across the country and a few from around the globe. Wherever we find ourselves, I encourage us this coming year to take on the perspective of the pilgrim in place.
