Something newish is upon us in Jackson. I’ve felt it these last few days standing on the sidelines of the lacrosse field, while cleaning up the yard after a winter’s worth of snow has melted, and after a few short romps on the lower trails. Warmth! It’s back! And, it’s wonderful. Everyone’s talking about warmth—at the gym, in line at the grocery store, and in Hansen Hall at coffee hour after the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. services. Just in time for the tongues of fire at Pentecost to return, the sun is warming our valley again. The grass is greening up and soon enough the warmth will turn our newly-greened valley to a cured brown for the summer.
Of course, warmth isn’t just a physical sensation. Warmth is emotional and spiritual, too. And, that got us thinking around here! What about celebrating a season of warmth—together! Those of us who are full-time residents of Jackson and year round members of St. John’s are beginning to welcome back summer residents and tourists coming to enjoy what we’re so privileged to enjoy year round. Our valley and town swell. Our single church campus becomes an archipelago of three churches in Jackson, Moose and Bondurant. What an opportunity for us to embrace a season of warmth as we welcome more people into our community and church.
Together, as a church, let’s celebrate this season of warmth by embracing the characteristics of emotional and spiritual warmth. We’ll spend the summer together practicing compassion, kindness, humility, vulnerability, patience and welcome. Supporting one another in this effort is sure to make a love-spreading difference in our community and a positive impact on those who come to visit.
Love, Jimmy
